The job of managing co-authors often falls to the first author of a paper, who are often graduate students or postdocs—younger scholars new to the tasks of soliciting contributions from peers or senior scholars, and to organizing and editing contributions. This course offers a clear method for first authors to follow, so they can keep track of designated tasks and contributions, manage deadlines and reminders, and assemble a complete package for submission to a journal. They learn where prior agreement is necessary, the different time points at which authors must come together and approve elements of the article, and how to collect and respond to advice and criticism from other authors, most of whom will be more senior than the first author. The course also covers ICMJE requirements for authorship and acknowledgement, how to prevent, document, and resolve disputes about authorship, and how to solve ethical questions.
