Designed for...
…master’s students, medical and health sciences graduate students, and researchers who have completed data collection and most of their analysis and are ready to write and submit their manuscripts.
Duration
3-6 hours
The course is shorter when delivered as a lecture, and longer if I build in exercises so students can work on their own Discussion sections.
Cost
My standard rate for teaching is 1530 CHF/Euro per day, or 1000 CHF/Euro per half-day. A full day of teaching includes 6 hours of teaching in the classroom, excluding breaks (e.g., coffee, lunch). For work outside Switzerland, clients also pay travel expenses.
This course can be taught alone or as part of a series of core courses in a full-day or multi-day program.
Many scientists find writing the Discussion section the most challenging part of a scientific paper. My method breaks the process down into manageable steps. In this class, writers will be taught how to identify their main findings and encouraged to think through the implications of those findings. This task serves as the basis for constructing the main message of the paper. The narrative in the Discussion section is then organized around the message. Participants will learn how to determine the number of paragraphs and order of arguments in their Discussion and how and why to include citations, based on the requirements of their target journal. In the longer version of the course, students who have finished their analyses will leave with a completed draft of the Discussion. Those who have not yet finished their analysis will leave with some sections complete and clear list of writing tasks necessary to finishing the rest.
