This course introduces students to key concepts in graphic design and data visualization. It centers on Ed Tufte’s recommendations to bring “data ink” forward and to minimize “non-data ink,” and explains what the “lie factor” is and how to reduce it in scientific figures. Students will learn how to choose the best type of chart or figure to showcase the message in their data and learn best practices for data presentation, including appropriate use of color and text, and designing for the color blind. The course covers the most important graphic design principles and can be used to improve and design graphics created with any piece of software.
